Similarities

Let’s kick things off with what VyprVPN and ExpressVPN have in common. Heads up; there are only a handful of similarities.

Apps/Configurations

vyprvpn apps
VyprVPN has apps for little-known devices, including QNAP and Anonabox.

ExpressVPN and VyprVPN have apps for all the major operating systems: Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and iOS (iPhone and iPad). In addition, you can use both VPNs on smart TVs, Chromebook and browser extensions.

If you want to use a VPN on a router, you can count on ExpressVPN and VyprVPN. They offer support for various routers, including DD-WRT and ASUS-WRT. ExpressVPN is a step ahead: It offers Aircove, a router with a built-in VPN.

VyprVPN attempts to stand out by offering apps for little-known products and operating systems, including QNAP, Anonabox and Blackphone. Unless you’re using such operating systems, ExpressVPN apps should suffice.

DNS Leak Protection

Both VPNs claim to offer DNS leak protection, and our tests confirm this claim. Neither ExpressVPN nor VyprVPN suffered from DNS leaks, giving us extra assurance that the VPNs can hide your online identity and activity. We’ve put together a guide on how you can run DNS leak tests yourself.

Logging Policy, Headquarters & Audits

However, if you hand over your data to a dodgy VPN service, your details might become fodder for hackers and all kinds of third parties. That’s why you need to check what a VPN provider does with your data, where it’s located and whether its policy has been confirmed by independent audit firms.

Two things stood out in ExpressVPN’s privacy policy. First, it only requires your email, a password and payment details, and doesn’t log user IP addresses and connection timestamps that can be traced back to you. Plus, ExpressVPN is upfront about who it shares data with: third-party service providers.

expressvpn privacy policy
ExpressVPN explains how it handles personal user data in its privacy policy.

Even more reassuring, ExpressVPN runs its entire server stack on volatile memory or RAM-only servers, so any potential information that ExpressVPN has on you is wiped every time a server reboots.

ExpressVPN has submitted itself to an audit of its no-logs policy by KPMG and received a clean bill of health. ExpressVPN is located in the British Virgin Islands, which is a privacy-friendly region. It doesn’t have mandatory data retention laws and it’s outside the Five, Nine and 14 Eyes surveillance alliances, meaning your data won’t be part of global surveillance by these countries.

If there’s anything to be concerned about, it should be Kape Technologies’ recent acquisition of ExpressVPN. Kape has been accused of creating a platform that was used to spread malware. You can read more about that in our article on Kape’s ExpressVPN acquisition, but it’s worth noting that there haven’t been any breaches since the acquisition.

Similarly, VyprVPN scores high marks in protecting user privacy. VyprVPN doesn’t log personally identifiable user data, including a user’s IP address and connection timestamps.

vyprvpn privacy policy
VyprVPN’s privacy policy clearly shows that it’s a no-logs VPN.

VyrprVPN’s parent company is Golden Frog, located in Switzerland. This country is a privacy-friendly jurisdiction and doesn’t allow businesses to process user data without permission. It’s also outside the Five, Nine and 14 Eyes surveillance alliances.

To confirm its no-logs policy, VyprVPN hired Leviathan, an independent security testing company, to test all its systems. The audit revealed that VyprVPN was committed to not logging personally identifiable information.

Money-Back Guarantee

expressvpn money back guarantee
You can use ExpressVPN for 30 days without losing your money.

Another feature that ExpressVPN and VyprVPN have in common is that they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on all plans. This is particularly important if you’re undecided on which VPN to use and want to take a test drive. The money-back guarantee is effectively a free trial as long as you request a refund within the specified period.

Differences

Now that we understand the similarities between ExpressVPN and VyprVPN, we’ll peel apart the differences. Some of the differences are subtle, but our experts have put both VPNs through the wringer and know how to spot them.

Speed

In terms of speeds, ExpressVPN and VyprVPN are worlds apart. When you check our Fastest VPN comparison, you’ll see that ExpressVPN posts impressive download and upload speeds, particularly in the U.S. Its latency is also relatively low, making it a good choice for gaming. You’re likely to get better speeds if you connect to ExpressVPN’s Lightway protocol.

VyprVPN, on the other hand, is inconsistent. During our VyprVPN review, we tested VyprVPN’s speeds on the OpenVPN, WireGuard and Chameleon protocols. The download and upload speeds on OpenVPN and the Chameleon protocol were disappointing. Its latency also skyrocketed. WireGuard gave us better speeds, but not as good as ExpressVPN’s speeds.

Pricing & Cost

VyprVpn pricing
VyprVPN offers affordable monthly and yearly plans compared to many VPNs in the industry.

VyprVPN’s subscription plans are more affordable than what ExpressVPN offers. While VyprVPN asks for $10 for its monthly subscription, ExpressVPN’s costs $12.95 per month.

If you look at yearly plans, VyprVPN continues to be a cheaper option compared to ExpressVPN. You’ll need $6.66 each month for a year’s worth of ExpressVPN (when including the three free months), while you’ll need $5 per month to get your hands on VyprVPN for a year.

ExpressVPN pricing
ExpressVPN is generally more expensive than many other VPNs.

Unlike VyprVPN, ExpressVPN offers a six-month program, which is great if you need a medium-term VPN. Be prepared to pay $9.99 per month for it, though, the same as VyprVPN’s monthly plan.

Simultaneous Connections

vyprvpn unlimited simultaneous connections
You can use your VyprVPN subscription on 10 devices simultaneously.

ExpressVPN allows you to connect to five devices at the same time, while VyprVPN permits 10 simultaneous VPN connections. At face value, this makes VyprVPN the better choice if you use multiple devices or want to share your subscription with friends and family.

However, you can skip device caps by connecting your VPN to a router, which only counts as one connection. You could even use your ExpressVPN subscription on five routers, protecting devices in five different homes.

Server Locations

expressvpn server locations
You can connect to an ExpressVPN server in 94 countries worldwide.

A good VPN’s server infrastructure should include a large number of servers covering different continents. That way, regardless of your location, you’ll get a nearby server to connect to for fast speeds. Plus, multiple servers reduce the chance of server overcrowding.

Regarding the VPN server network, ExpressVPN is the superior choice. First of all, it has servers spread across 94 countries. This is one of the most extensive server networks in the VPN industry (Surfshark has 100, though).

VyprVPN is evasive about naming the number of countries it has servers in. From its Android app, we counted servers available in at least 60 countries. ExpressVPN and VyprVPN’s server spread covers various continents, including the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. ExpressVPN has more servers than VyprVPN in each of these regions.

Kill Switch

expressvpn kill switch
ExpressVPN calls its kill switch “Network Lock,” and it’s available on all the major operating systems.

If you’re an activist, blogger or journalist, or you deal with sensitive information and can’t afford to have your data exposed for a second, a kill switch is a must-have. Your VPN connection can drop for various reasons, including software issues and unstable internet connections. However, a kill switch serves as a last line of defense, preventing accidental exposure of your data.

ExpressVPN and VyprVPN have kill switches, although there is a difference. ExpressVPN’s kill switch, known as “Network Lock,” is available on all operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux and routers. VyprVPN’S kill switch is available on Windows, Mac and Android devices, but not iOS devices.

We contacted VyprVPN support agents about the lack of a kill switch on iOS devices, but they could not give us a clear timeline for its implementation. This is a major flaw with VyprVPN, so we recommend ExpressVPN, especially if you’re using Apple mobile devices.

Protocols and Encryption

expressvpn vpn protocols
ExpressVPN offers four protocols to help you enjoy the best combination of speed and security.

Both VPNs offer a variety of protocol options for optimizing your speed and security. ExpressVPN offers four VPN protocols alongside the ever-secure AES-256 encryption: OpenVPN (TCP and UDP), Lightway (TCP and UDP) and IKEv2. OpenVPN has a long track record of offering a good mix of speed and security.

IKEv2 is ideal for mobile devices since it has great reconnection capabilities, but is unavailable on ExpressVPN’s Android app. As the name suggests, ExpressVPN built Lightway on a light code base, making it one of the fastest protocols around.

VyprVPN has a proprietary protocol known as the Chameleon protocol. It’s designed to ensure that any snooper won’t be able to decipher your VPN use. This is one of the reasons VyprVPN is the best VPN for China. VyprVPN also offers the OpenVPN protocol for all devices. However, its IKEv2 protocol is only available on iOS devices.

The main difference between ExpressVPN and VyprVPN’s protocol offerings is that VyprVPN has the WireGuard protocol (ChaCha20 cipher). This protocol is exceptionally lightweight, fast and has long been considered the future of protocols. VyprVPN offers a wide range of protocols, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs.

Streaming Performance

expressvpn streaming homepage
ExpressVPN is a reliable choice and provides fast speeds for streaming any movie of your choice.

ExpressVPN is the definition of perfect streaming ability. All of its servers are optimized to unblock virtually any streaming provider, including big names like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer and Disney Plus. Even better, its fast speeds ensure that you can stream your favorite shows without any interruption.

Although VyprVPN offers access to many streaming services, its relatively sluggish speeds make it a poor choice for streaming compared to ExpressVPN. As we highlighted in our VyprVPN review, videos might take a while to load, you might experience buffering wheels and the picture quality might be poor.

VyprVPN also can’t unblock streaming sites as reliably as ExpressVPN. While ExpressVPN got us into all platforms on the first try, we sometimes needed multiple attempts to get into Amazon Prime Video and Netflix libraries with VyprVPN’s servers.

Torrenting

vyprvpn torrenting
You can use VyprVPN to unblock and download from many torrenting sites.

If you read our best VPN for torrenting piece, you’ll notice both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN on the list. Both can help you with popular torrenting clients, including uTorrent and BitTorrent.

We consider ExpressVPN a better choice for torrenting because it allows for torrenting on all its servers in 94 countries. VyprVPN also allows torrenting, but ExpressVPN is faster, which is helpful if you’re going to download large files.

Customer Support

expressvpn knowledgebase
ExpressVPN’s support center has detailed guides to answer any questions you might have about their service.

If you run into any issue while using ExpressVPN or VyprVPN, you have many options for redress. First, you can check out their knowledgebases. There, you’ll find articles on everything from setup guides to FAQs. We looked through their knowledgebases, and we can confirm that they should be able to answer most of your basic questions about their services.

vyprvpn knowledgebase
VyprVPN has a help center that contains startup guides, FAQs and troubleshooting guides.

Both have agents on standby you can contact through a ticket. We tested their ticketing option, and ExpressVPN got back to us within six hours. VyprVPN took a little longer (12 hours), but is still reasonably fast.

For immediate support, both VPN providers have a live chat. We tested both live chat options and were impressed with the promptness of the responses and the patience of the agents. The only challenge we had with VyprVPN was that, in some cases, the agents did not seem to have answers to the questions we asked.

Which Is Better: VyprVPN vs ExpressVPN?

ExpressVPN is better than VyprVPN in many respects. It boasts faster download and upload speeds, which makes it the better choice if you’re performing an activity that involves loads of data. ExpressVPN’s latency is more stable, and as a result, it’s preferable for gaming.

In terms of streaming ability, ExpressVPN again takes the honors. It gets into virtually all streaming providers from the get-go, and its fast speeds ensure that you can stream in HD or 4K without missing a beat. With VyprVPN, you may have to change servers to get into Netflix, and be ready for buffering wheels and lags.

ExpressVPN has more server locations than VyprVPN. This makes it a good choice if you’re often on the road. If you live in or are going to an internet-restrictive country like China or Russia, VyprVPN’s Chameleon protocol makes a strong case for itself. It’s great at hiding your VPN traffic, but ExpressVPN already has obfuscation implemented on all its servers.

We Recommend VyprVPN if You Want…

  • A privacy-focused VPN: VyprVPN doesn’t keep personally identifiable information and is located in Switzerland, a privacy-friendly jurisdiction.
  • Many simultaneous connections: You can use VyprVPN across 10 devices at the same time.
  • A VPN for restrictive regions: VyprVPN’s Chameleon protocol makes it a good choice for areas like China, where your connection might be monitored.

We Recommend ExpressVPN if You Want…

  • A fast VPN: ExpressVPN boasts fast download and upload speeds and low latency.
  • A VPN to unblock streaming services: All ExpressVPN’s servers are optimized to unblock any streaming service.
  • A beginner-friendly VPN: ExpressVPN’s apps are simple, organized and easy to navigate.
