TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 8 Launch: The Hardware Is Ready, The Standard and the FCC Aren’t

TP-Link unveiled a full Wi-Fi 8 lineup this month, led by the Archer 8 Ultra router and the Deco 8 Ultra mesh system. Neither product runs on a finished wireless standard, and neither has cleared the national security review that now decides which foreign-made routers can even reach American shelves.

The Archer 8 Ultra and Deco 8 Ultra, By the Numbers

TP-Link distributed the announcement through BusinessWire on August 31, timed to IFA Berlin, which ran September 4 through 8. The Archer 8 Ultra is a standalone tri-band router rated for up to 19 Gbps of aggregate wireless throughput, built around an 18-antenna array and a single 10 Gbps wired port. Chipsets come from Broadcom, Qualcomm and MediaTek, according to the release. Preorders open September 30 in what TP-Link describes only as “select regions,” and the company has disclosed no pricing.

The Deco 8 Ultra mesh system rates higher, up to 22 Gbps aggregate, and ships as a three-unit pack TP-Link says covers up to 9,800 square feet and supports more than 200 connected devices. It isn’t due until the first quarter of 2027. A Roam 8 travel router and a line of Wi-Fi 8 extenders and adapters follow in the second quarter of 2027, also unpriced.

Even the name isn’t settled across the coverage. TechRadar and TechBriefly call the router the Archer 9 Ultra, while TP-Link’s own release and outlets including GadgetMatch and Dong Knows Tech use Archer 8 Ultra, the name this article follows.

A Standard That’s Still Two Drafts From Finished

None of this hardware runs on a completed specification. TP-Link’s release describes it as built on the “upcoming” 802.11bn standard, the formal name for Wi-Fi 8, and that word choice holds up. The IEEE task group overseeing 802.11bn approved Draft 2.0 at its July 2026 meeting in Montreal, according to industry tracker Wi-Fi NOW Global, and expects several more drafts before final approval, which it’s targeting for May 2028. The Wi-Fi Alliance plans to open its certification program at CES in January 2028, months ahead of that final sign-off, roughly the same sequence Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 followed.

TP-Link has been building toward this launch for almost a year. It announced what it called the industry’s first successful Wi-Fi 8 connection in a hardware trial back in October 2025, then previewed a concept version of the Archer 8 in May 2026. TP-Link President Jeff Barney told Forbes at the time: “For years, Wi-Fi innovation has been measured by peak theoretical speeds. But what users actually care about is consistency.” That preview carried the same caveat this launch does: the standard behind it doesn’t exist yet.

Shipping ahead of ratification isn’t unusual. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices both reached the market on draft or early chipsets, and firmware closed most of the gaps that remained. Early Wi-Fi 8 buyers are taking on the same risk: compatibility or feature drift between what a device supports today and what the finished standard eventually requires, a cost that comes with going first.

A Bigger Problem Than the IEEE Calendar

The standard isn’t TP-Link’s biggest obstacle. The FCC is. In March 2026, the agency added foreign-made consumer routers to its Covered List, a national security designation that followed an interagency finding that all foreign-produced routers pose a risk, citing documented vulnerabilities in TP-Link hardware that state-linked hacking groups, including Volt Typhoon and Salt Typhoon, have exploited. New foreign-made routers can no longer get standard FCC equipment authorization. They can only get “Conditional Approval,” issued by the Department of War, the name the Pentagon adopted after a 2025 executive order (it remains legally the Department of Defense), or by the Department of Homeland Security.

Netgear and Amazon’s Eero secured that approval in April 2026, on condition that each commit to a plan to shift some manufacturing to the US. Netgear’s approval, granted April 14, covers new router models through October 1, 2027; Eero’s, granted April 22, runs through October 31, 2027. TP-Link applied around the same time, arguing it had restructured out of Chinese ownership into a separate US entity, TP-Link Systems Inc. It’s still waiting. The NSA publicly flagged vulnerabilities in TP-Link routers the same week that application went in, and as recently as September 10, ASUS received Conditional Approval covering its entire networking portfolio through March 6, 2028, plus a Wi-Fi 8 router of its own, the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro. TP-Link, which holds roughly a fifth of the US consumer router market, still has no confirmed US release date for either the Archer 8 Ultra or the Deco 8 Ultra.

The Real Pitch Is Consistency, Not Speed

The 19 Gbps and 22 Gbps headline numbers are the least meaningful part of this announcement. Wi-Fi 8 keeps the same 320 MHz maximum channel width and roughly 23 Gbps ceiling as Wi-Fi 7. It isn’t raising the speed limit. What it changes is consistency: features like Multi-AP Coordination and coordinated beamforming are built to cut latency spikes and jitter across a mesh network, closing the gap between wireless and wired reliability instead of pushing wireless speed higher on paper. TP-Link’s own figures back that framing better than the throughput numbers do: the company projects a 33% improvement in real-world throughput and a 15% gain in mesh performance under heavy load, compared with its Wi-Fi 7 hardware, not a leap in peak speed.

My take is that TP-Link’s marketing, and most of the coverage repeating it, buries that story under the bigger numbers on the box. Buyers should weigh network reliability under load over the aggregate Gbps figure, and should expect firmware updates as the standard finalizes over the next two years. American buyers should also expect to wait on a separate timeline: TP-Link isn’t just racing an unfinished standard, it’s racing competitors who have already cleared a regulatory bar it hasn’t.

Wi-Fi 8 will eventually ship on a finished, certified standard, the way Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6E did before it. Whether TP-Link gets to sell it in the country where it holds a fifth of the router market is a separate bet from whether the standard itself holds up, and it’s the one TP-Link has far less control over.
