Key Takeaways: The Adventure Time Spinoff
- Adventure Time spin-off series Fionna and Cake starts Thursday, August 31 on Max in the U.S.
- You can also watch it with the Max add-on with services like Amazon Prime Video and Hulu, and this way allows you to watch the show for free.
- If you’re not in the U.S., you’ll need to use a VPN to unblock Max. We recommend using ExpressVPN, but NordVPN is also a good choice.
Adventure Time is back once again — well, kind of. This time we follow the adventures of Finn and Jake’s gender-swapped versions in the spin-off Fionna and Cake. Unlike the original series, Fionna and Cake won’t be available on Cartoon Network. In this guide, we explain everything you need to know about how and where to watch Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.
Fionna and Cake featured in Adventure Time back in the third season during one of Ice King’s short stories. With that in mind, the new series will also include the Ice King’s former self, Simon Petrikov. We’ll see the trio embarking on their own marvelous misadventures in the Land of Ooo, ready to explore different multiverses.
The ability to stream Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake will depend on your location. Geoblocks are set in place to ensure that only certain regions can access it. We’ll explain a little more about this in a minute. For now, rest assured that with the help of a decent VPN like ExpressVPN, you’ll be able to access the show from anywhere.
Where to Watch Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake
If you don’t already know what geoblocks are, then here’s a quick explanation. For you to be able to watch a show or movie in your region, a streaming service or network has to have paid for the right to air it there. In many cases, one service will have the right to air it in one country, while a different service has the right to show it in another country.
For example, Netflix might have the right to air a show in the U.K., but Disney+ might hold the right to air the same show in the U.S. That means Netflix has to block its U.S. viewers from accessing it, and Disney+ has to block viewers outside the U.S. from accessing it. In another example, Hulu is only available in the U.S., so it blocks its entire platform from outside viewers.
Those blocks are geoblocks, or regional restrictions. The services determine your location from your IP address, and that decides whether you can get access. A virtual private network (VPN) can help you bypass the blocks. Once you connect to one of its servers, your IP address will be masked with one from that country, making you look like you’re physically there.
Which Streaming Services Have the Fionna and Cake Spin-Off
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is a Max original, meaning it’s only available there in the U.S. It’s available on the platform Thursday, Aug. 31. There will be 10 half-hour episodes altogether, with the first two available straight away and the rest being released weekly.
You can also watch all 10 seasons of the original Adventure Time series there, as well as the four specials from Adventure Time: Distant Lands.
Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service Max, formerly known as HBO Max, is only available in the U.S. The HBO Max service is still available in other regions, such as Europe and Latin America, but we’re not sure when Fionna and Cake will be available there.
You can either sign up for Max directly or with a streaming service that offers the Max add-on, such as Hulu or Amazon Prime Video. If you’re not in the country, you can use a U.S. VPN server to get access, but you’ll also need a U.S. payment method (we mention a workaround if you don’t have one in our how-to further down).
Fionna and Cake will also be available on Fox8 and Binge in Australia. The Fox8 premiere starts at 8 p.m. AEST Friday, Sept. 1 and new episodes will be available every Friday. If you decide to watch it on Binge, you can take advantage of the 14-day free trial.
Where Can I Watch Fionna and Cake for Free?
Since there aren’t many options for watching Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, at least for now, there are only a couple of ways you can watch it for free.
You can’t get a free trial of Max directly, but you can with the Max add-on. Granted, that means signing up for another streaming service on top of Max, but both Hulu and Amazon Prime Video offer a free trial, too.
Binge in Australia also offers a free trial and the show should be available there from Friday, Sept. 1.
If you’re not in the U.S. or Australia and need to use a VPN to get access, you can pair the free trial with a VPN’s money-back guarantee to watch it completely free. That said, while the first two Fionna and Cake episodes will be available on release date, the rest will air weekly. This means that Max’s seven-day free trial won’t be enough unless you hold off until all 10 episodes have aired and then binge-watch them.
Is Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake on Netflix?
No. Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is a Max original, meaning it’s only available there and the odd other service in other countries. That is, at least, for now. Adventure Time: Distant Lands is also a Max original, but since its release on Max, it has become available to stream on other services, too. The same could happen to Fionna and Cake.
For that reason, it’s a good idea to check Netflix every now and then to see if it has the show or movie that you want, and that doesn’t only mean in your region.
How to Unblock Netflix U.S. & Other Libraries
Netflix is available in almost all countries, but the content in those countries can differ. That’s usually due to Netflix only having distribution rights for certain shows and movies in specific regions, but it can sometimes be because of cultural or language differences.
Anyway, this means that while you might not find a show you want on Netflix in your region, it might be available in another Netflix region. Switching to another Netflix region is easy, so long as you have a VPN. Simply connect to a server in the country that you want to check, then log in to Netflix as usual. You should now see that region’s content library.
How to Watch Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake Free Online With a VPN
In this section, we’ll show you how to watch Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake for free. We’ve used the free seven-day trial of the Max add-on paired with Amazon Prime Video’s free 30-day trial. Remember, you’ll need to wait until the series has concluded to watch the whole show with the free trial.
- Sign Up for ExpressVPN
Subscribe to a VPN like ExpressVPN, which comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Install ExpressVPN’s App
Download the VPN software for your device and install it. Then, open the app to log in to your new account.
- Connect to a Server in the United States
Find a U.S. server and click on it to connect. You can search ExpressVPN’s server list by clicking the three dots and scrolling or using the search bar. Although ExpressVPN usually connects once you click a server, sometimes that doesn’t happen and you need to click the big power type button as well.

Go to the Amazon Prime Video website and search for Max. Then, sign up for both the Max and Amazon Prime Video free trials. If you don’t have a U.S. payment method, you can use a virtual prepaid U.S. card like StatesCard to pay. The Best VPNs to Stream the Adventure Time Spin-Off
Watching Fionna and Cake on Max in the U.S. is a breeze, so long as you have the right VPN service. You need one that can access streaming services without issue and that has fast speeds. Here are our top two recommendations.
1. ExpressVPN
Pros:
- Unlocks all streaming apps
- Fast streaming speeds
- Easy-to-use apps
Cons:
- Pricey
ExpressVPN is our top pick for the best VPN for streaming and the best VPN for Max, and with good reason. It has servers in more than 90 countries, including plenty in the U.S., you can access pretty much any streaming service with it and it has fast speeds to provide a decent, uninterrupted stream. You can read all about this in our full ExpressVPN review.
You can use the VPN on almost any device. Even beginners will have no problem using it because its apps are super simple — you can’t miss the “on” button in the middle. Don’t just take our word for it, though. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee available, which you can use to take it for a spin. If you decide to stick with it, the annual rate is the best.
2. NordVPN
Pros:
- Fastest speeds available
- Accesses streaming apps
- Interactive desktop map
Cons:
- Poor server map on mobile
NordVPN is another great choice for streaming on Max and it’s a more affordable option from ExpressVPN. Its two-year plan offers great value, and if you change your mind within 30 days, you can get a full refund.
You get the fastest VPN speeds with NordVPN, which is a major plus when it comes to streaming. You also get servers in 60 countries, and it can easily access streaming services. It’s also easy to choose the server you want, especially with the use of its interactive map. That said, it’s not great to use on mobile, so keep that in mind. What Is the Adventure Time Spin-Off About?
The new Adventure Time series, Fionna and Cake, was created by Pendleton Ward, who also created the original series for Cartoon Network, and produced by Adam Muto. Fionna and Cake aims to target a young adult audience, though we’re not sure how much more “adult” it will be from the Cartoon Network days since Adventure Time sometimes pushed the boundaries anyway.
The series premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con in July this year and the trailer made its way to Max mid-August.
Each character is an alternate version to those in the original series, aside from former Ice King, Simon Petrikov. We’ll also see the likes of Marshall Lee and Prince Gumball, and we’re sure you can guess who their alternate versions are. Of course, the main duo are Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat, as opposed to Finn the Human and Jake the Dog.
We’ll see the new duo journey through the multiverse, enlisting the help of Simon along the way, as they face off against a powerful new antagonist. However, without his crazy crown, Simon will no longer have magic powers. The story brings self-discovery and we’ll also find out who the new villain is — could it be the Lich or the Ice King equivalent, Ice Queen?
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake Release Date
The show was first announced for Max back in 2021 and the release date for the first two episodes of Adventure Time spin-off Fionna and Cake is Aug. 31, with the remaining eight episodes being released weekly.
If you’ll be watching the show on Binge or Fox8 in Australia, you can enjoy it from Friday, Sept. 1.
Final Thoughts
We hope you’ve found our guide useful and now understand where exactly you can watch Adventure Time’s new series Fionna and Cake, as well as how to access it if you’re not in the U.S.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max is the place to be for the U.S., and you can also watch the original show and the four specials there. However, if you’re not located in the U.S., you’ll need to use a VPN to access it. ExpressVPN is the go-to VPN for us, and you can use its 30-day money-back guarantee to see if you like it.
